Is it a good Idea to have your dog with you in your car

Imagine driving down the road, listening to your favorite radio station and your dog sitting next to you. You have the windows down and it is a sunny morning and your are headed to your favorite park to spend a relaxing day. Your favorite dog knows where you are going and knows that it will be a great day. As always, he puts his head out the window and you can tell that he is excited for the upcoming day. In most cases you will have a great day with your dog, but you should think again whether having your dog in the seat next to you is a good idea.

Currently there are 78 millions dogs in the United States, according to the American Pet Products Association. From those 78 millions dogs, 60 Percent have been driven in a car at least once a month for a period of one year. The percent of people who admit that they have engaged in an action that will harm their ability to drive due to a distraction created by their dog is 65 Percent. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety looking away from the road for two seconds makes your chance of being in an accident twice as high! Almost 90 Percent of people in the United States choose to leave their dogs without a pet restraint.

After time dogs become like a part of our family. We do our best to make sure that they are well taken care of, but sometimes we do now realize how dangerous it is for them, and us, when they are without a pet restraint in a moving vehicle. Dogs can be more distracting than children and having them in a pet restraint will dramatically decrease the chances of getting in a car accident. Looking at the previous statistics, we would encourage using a pet restraint for dogs just like we would put a seat belt on a child.
